Oracle Advanced Analytics

Here we have a new features and functionalities is now available for Oracle Database, that enhances the database into a platform for business analytics. Oracle Advanced Analytics, a combination of Oracle Data Mining and Oracle R Enterprise, delivers predictive analytics, data mining, text mining, statistical analysis, advanced numerical computations and interactive graphics inside the database.

R Programming:

R program is an open statistical computing and graphics language. Its started in 1993 developed by “Ross Ihaka” and “Robert Gentleman” as an alternative to SAS, SPSS and other proprietary statistical Packages, Originally, they called as “S”, and renamed to “R” in 1996. R possesses an extensive catalogue of statistical and graphical methods. It includes machine learning algorithm, linear regression, time series, statistical inference to name a few. Most of the R libraries are written in R, but for heavy computational task, C, C++ and Fortran codes are preferred. It is mainly used by statisticians and data miners to develop statistical software for analysis of Data.

Reasons to integrate R into Oracle:

The main reason to integrate R language into Oracle Database is to create an analytics platform for big data analytics. Oracle Advanced Analytics eliminates data movement to external analytical servers, accelerates information cycle times and reduces total cost of ownership. When R statistical programming language runs standalone, it is limited to the memory and processing power of the machine where it runs. ORE increases the memory and improves the performance of R, using Oracle’s engineered systems (Exadata, Big Data Appliance and Exalytics).

OBIEE integrated with R:

ORE (Oracle R Enterprise) embedded R Executing SQL Interface helps in integrating with OBIEE RPD and Dashboards. R script which is best for statistical data analysis can be integrated with OBIEE to have the best analysis between processes or products using distribution analysis and weighted t-tests, p-value scores, returning numerical results and computations. OBIEE 12C comes with embedded R functions like Trendline, Regression, Outliers and Clusters. To use these functions, we need to install R software and additional R packages.

  • R-Trendline- This “Trendline” algorithm can be used to add Trendline of Basic Regression Models to Plot. Simply it helps for Adding a new trendline in the Graph.
  • R-Regression- This “Regression” algorithm can be used to determine correlations or relationships within your data. It can also be used to make forecast predictions.
  • R-Outliers- This “Outliers” algorithm can identify the outliers or exceptions within your data. The function just returns TRUE or FALSE depending on whether the record is determined to be an outlier.
  • R-Clusters- A “Cluster” algorithm will attempt to form groups (clusters) within your data. Once the groups have been formed, it is up to you as the user to determine if there is any business relevance.

Benefits with ORE Feature:

Oracle R Enterprise is a component of the Oracle Advanced Analytics option of the Oracle Database Enterprise Edition. Usually, when working with a lot of data, it is in a database, and the database tends to run on a powerful machine such as an ExaData or an Oracle Database Appliance, which has hardware specifically designed for working with large datasets. Here, we make working with the database from R easier. ORE also allows to use the hardware of the database directly by providing an embedded R runtime which can be executed from SQL and PL/SQL. This uses the EXTPROC database feature. This feature makes the analytical power of R directly available in our database.

  1. This was very helpful and insightful. Easy to read and understand. Statistics is a field of science concerned with gathering, organizing, analyzing, and extrapolating data from samples to the entire population.
